Hello, dear readers of the Tyulyagin project! Today we will talk about such indicators as GDP per capita. We have already considered GDP indicator and compared countries by this criterion. In this article we will talk about what GDP per capita is, how it differs from. In this article I will give a complete list of the ranking of the countries of the world by GDP per capita. In addition, you can also familiarize yourself with the dynamics of GDP per capita in Russia for last years.

What is GDP per capita and what does it mean

GDP per capita is economic indicator, which reflects the value of all final products produced domestically for the year, divided by the average population for the year.

GDP per capita when comparing the indicator for countries of the world is usually considered in US dollars, however, when calculating their own GDP per capita, countries recalculate the indicator in national currency at the market rate of the dollar. The formula for calculating GDP per capita is very simple:

GDP per capita = GDP of the country / Population of the country

It is also important to say that GDP per capita is often compared with the indicator. However, this is not entirely true, since GDP per capita does not reflect the personal income of the population. However, GDP per capita is often measured as an average indicator of the quality of life of people in a country.

In addition to comparing the life of the population in different countries ah of the world, the indicator of GDP per capita in dynamics over several years allows us to track changes in welfare in the country. GDP per capita is also considered to be an indicator of the performance of an economy.

How GDP per capita differs from normal GDP

Types of GDP per capita

As with GDP, GDP per capita can be calculated in two ways. Hence, there are two types of GDP per capita:

  • GDP (nominal) per capita
  • GDP (PPP - purchasing power parity) per capita

The second type, based on PPP, is considered more accurate, since it reduces the difference between the exchange rates of different countries and assesses welfare more objectively. When assessing and comparing the welfare of the countries of the world, international institutions (for example, the IMF) often take into account the GDP per capita indicator at purchasing power parity.

Dynamics of GDP per capita in Russia in recent years

GDP per capita in Russia. Click on the picture to enlarge

As can be seen from the table below and the graph above, since 2000, GDP per capita in Russia has been growing. However, the crises of 2008 and 2014 made themselves felt. After the Ukraine crisis and the imposition of sanctions by Western countries, GDP per capita in Russia did not recover to its peak values in 2013, when GDP per capita in nominal terms reached $ 16,000. In 2019, according to forecasts in nominal terms, GDP per capita will decline compared to 2018 and will amount to $ 11,191. The low GDP per capita in Russia is largely due to low prices for the main export of the country - energy carriers. Despite the fact that in recent years the share of oil and gas exports in GDP has been declining, it still takes the lion's share. If we take the indicator of GDP per capita in purchasing power parity, then it amounted to $ 29,267 in 2018, and in 2019 it should exceed $ 30,000, according to experts' forecasts.

GDP per capita is a parameter that means domestic gross product, produced and generated by the entire state as a whole, divided by the total number of inhabitants of this state. In most cases, this parameter, together with others, is used by the International Monetary Fund to assess the welfare of a country, that is, to determine the degree of its wealth or poverty in comparison with others. The considered parameter allows one to give an estimate without taking into account the size of the territory, seasonal and conjunctive fluctuations of the economy.

GDP or Gross Domestic Product is the value of goods and services produced by a country. As a rule, GDP is calculated for a year and presented in national currency, or in US dollars, for conducting comparative analysis... When calculating the GDP indicator, all sectors of the economy are involved.

There are three types of GDP:

  1. Nominal GDP - expresses a formal nature, calculated from current prices excluding inflation.
  2. Real GDP - the calculation takes into account the inflation of the current year.
  3. GDP in purchasing power parity per capita is the value of goods and services produced by the inhabitants of a country, expressed in US dollars / total number of inhabitants.

GDP is an economically significant value; it can be called a reflection of the life of the country's inhabitants. When the GDP grows, life improves, and when it decreases, accordingly, it worsens. GDP is an indicator of the success of the economy, its decline is a decrease in the well-being of citizens, who are the basis of the state.

It is worth saying that for the first time the world heard about the indicator of gross domestic product in 1934 in the United States, it was proposed by Simon Kuznets. Until that moment, there was no publicly available information about the country's economic activity and its results.

Simon Kuznets made a presentation to Congress and presented his estimate of the national income. In 1971, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work.

GDP is calculated by statistical institutes, which transmit this information to the source - The World Bank World Development Indicators. Statistics are updated annually and presented publicly in November-December of each year.

GDP of Russia

At the same time, the GDP per capita indicator, calculated at purchasing power parity, in 2017 places Russia in 55th place. Based on these data, the average Russian spent 4.5 thousand dollars in 2017.

For a comparative analysis, it is worth considering the GDP growth rates in Russia over the past 10 years:

Year%
2007 8,5
2008 5,2
2009 -7,8
2010 4,3
2011 4,3
2012 3,4
2013 1,3
2014 0,7
2015 -3,7
2016 -0,8
2017 1,5

According to experts, the main reason for the slowdown in the growth of the Russian economy is the lack of reforms. The country's economic policy is kept afloat, sometimes it even shows improvements, but for a real change for the better, there are not enough appropriate measures and actions.

Latest data

State Russian economy not catastrophic. Of course, there are a lot of internal problems, as well as external US sanctions, which in one way or another contribute to the country's economy, but even so external debt the country after deducting liquid assets is very small, 10% of GDP.

This official information, which speaks and reflects rather the political side of the economy. Speaking about the country's GDP, one cannot but touch upon the topic of population poverty. For the fourth year in a row, the incomes of Russians have been declining (on average by 3-5% annually). At the end of 2017, the poverty level in Russia is 13.8%.

Thus, the economic condition and GDP of Russia does not always reflect real life its population. After all, people are more interested in their own capabilities, and not in the figures of a mythical GDP for them.

GDP in the world

Specialists economic statistics analyzed the change in GDP in the world for the period from 1970 to 2016:

  • World GDP increased from 3398.7 to 75212.7, by 718.17 billion US dollars (22 times). This increase was facilitated by the growth of the world's population.
  • GDP per capita increased from USD 921 to USD 10167. Average annual income growth of the population amounted to 201 US dollars.

Also, calculations and analysis of projected economic changes in the world are carried out. From the forecasts for 2050, there are such scenarios for the development of events:

  • India will overtake the United States and occupy the second place in terms of market volume, while Indonesia, ahead of Japan and Germany, will take the fourth place.
  • The fastest pace of economic development until 2050 is assigned to Vietnam, which is predicted to be 20th in the world GDP ranking.
  • Until 2042, the volume of the world economy may double.

The process of redistribution of the world today continues, GDP rating updated, there is an upward trend in economic growth in developing countries in Asia and other regions, which are gradually crowding out mature developed markets.

As the saying that characterizes the mentality of the Slavic peoples says - "It's good where we are not." Interest, the desire to live better, the desire for comfort and stability awakens human interest in other countries. Building international rankings, disputes about the economy and dry numbers will rarely interest a person if they do not have a down-to-earth character that is close to understanding.

Therefore, speaking about the economy, one should talk about the consequences for the inhabitants of the country from doing this or that economic policy... China's economy is comparable to that of the United States today, and has every chance of surpassing it soon. However, everyone understands that the standard of living of the average Chinese family is very different from the standard of living of the same family from the United States.

Attractive economies are observed in the following countries:

  • San Marino is a dwarf state, the oldest sovereign state, founded in 301 BC. Considering the economic attractiveness of San Marino, it is worth noting that it is one of the richest countries in terms of GDP per capita ($ 44,480). The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in Europe. This situation was facilitated by the development of the financial sector and tourism in the country. However, over the past few years, San Marino's high ratings have faltered somewhat as a result of Europe's fight against money laundering. For a long time, San Marino was a tax haven, and funds from Italian taxpayers were actively attracted here. After a tax amnesty in Italy (2009), San Marino banks lost a third of their assets.
  • Canada is known for its stable middle class. According to experts, the middle class of Canada in the coming years will be at a level higher than the middle class in the United States. Rising prices for commodities as well as the emerging financial industry in Canada make it economically developing country, Canada is gaining pace of development every year.
  • Switzerland is a unique country in terms of economic standards, since Switzerland cannot single out a specific prosperous industry of the country. She is successfully involved in the technological, financial and industrial fields. Switzerland's political neutrality creates ideal conditions for the location of the headquarters of both multinational companies and non-profit organizations.
  • United States - GDP per capita is $ 53,101, one of maximum performance... At the same time, the problem in the country is the large difference in income between segments of the population. The difference is too clear between rich and poor families. At the same time, the US middle class in terms of living standards exceeds most countries in the world.
  • Singapore is an island state and the most important port in the world. Singapore is a commercial hub for transportation in Asia, the Asian capital financial world... Practically the center of currency trading, Singapore has increased its average daily currency trading volume by 50% over the past three years. Also Singapore is famous for its transparent and business-friendly tax policy and high level security. It is for these reasons that he is one of the three leaders in receiving the richest people in the world.

There are a lot of prosperous, stable countries, with a favorable economy for the population, and this is far from an exhaustive list, everyone notes something important for themselves and gives their preference to the economy of this or that country.

As opposed to successful and economically developed countries, there have always been countries with weak economies. Geographically, everything poorest countries, they are also the worst according to the GDP rating, concentrated around the equator and tropical latitudes. This is due to the fact that it is in this territory that the highest population density is.

  1. Afghanistan - GDP per capita - USD 687. The history of Afghanistan is known to us firsthand. The civil war in the country began in the 80s. The population of the state is involved either in hostilities or in the cultivation of drugs, which are the backbone of the Afghan economy.
  2. Liberia - GDP per capita - USD 500. The state was founded in the 19th century by slaves released from the United States. Liberia bears little resemblance to the classic example of the state, the basis of the population (95%) is made up of aborigines, tribes who are exclusively engaged in sorting out relations with each other.
  3. Burgundy - GDP per capita - USD 389. The country is dominated by Agriculture, there are no other occupations for the population, although it does not give people any income and prospects.
  4. Niger - GDP per capita - USD 381. Over the past 25 years, several military coups have taken place in the country, which entailed a non-stop redistribution of power, without a result or end. Hopeless poverty characterizes this country in the best possible way.
  5. Democratic Republic of the Congo - GDP per capita - USD 216. The result of the civil war that began in the 90s, which lasted with short interruptions and outbreaks for about 8 years. Over the years, the already shaky economy of the Congo has been completely destroyed.
