Quality is more important than size. Most likely, these are the words that guide people who review small house designs and decide to build them. In fact, there can be a huge number of reasons for building a small house: some decide to save a little money on building materials, someone wants to stand out from the general background of classic houses and surprise their neighbors with their taste and originality.

Is there accurate information about how much square meters make a person happy? It’s hard to disagree with the fact that a small house can look attractive, and sometimes even fabulous.

Why are tiny houses popular?

Small private houses are becoming more and more popular every year, which is mainly due to the fact that people decide to make their lives simpler, but brighter.

Projects tailored to youth needs small houses are constantly being improved in various ways and today a real breakthrough has occurred - designers, together with designers, have turned small houses into a single style, calling it eco-life.

In the United States of America there are already several companies whose main specialization is beautiful small houses built on an area of ten to fifty square meters.

It’s hard to believe that you can really fit all the necessary things in such a small area, but this is true. With a small area, it is very important to pay due attention to the organization of the internal space so that it is used as efficiently as possible.

Young people, of course, are no strangers to living in real Spartan conditions. For them, the main thing is to have a roof over their heads when it rains.

Many of the students have already appreciated the interesting work of the popular architect Van Bo Le Mentzel, whose house seems to lack only one thing - a rope so that it can be carried with you when traveling. His houses look so unusual that people even come from other cities to see him live.

It is worth noting that the most big square this type of house is approximately 40 sq.m., but in practice almost all buildings are much smaller. In addition to the attractive price, buyers are also lured by the interior of a small house, which is usually incredibly neat and comfortable.

Looking through photos of small houses, you can see one of the most original options proposed by Californian artist Gregory Kloehn. Almost all of his houses are made from either trash containers or recycled materials, and after construction, he hands over the keys to them not only to buyers, but also to the homeless.

Not all home owners are happy with their minimal living conditions, so they try to make the most of small rooms, resorting to the use of modern technologies.

In this regard, it is impossible not to mention the Egg House, built by dmvA. It accommodates a kitchen, a bathroom, a bed, as well as several niches in which it will be convenient to store various things. When opening the nose of the house, it can be used as a very ordinary veranda.

Bedroom design in a small house

One of the most important rooms in the house, regardless of its size, is the room in which you fall asleep and wake up. After all, the bedroom is the place where you can restore your strength after a difficult day at work. Of course, it is much more pleasant to spend precious and long-awaited hours of rest on a comfortable bed in a room where you can also arrange all the most important things.

Even if the room is very small, it is necessary that it be equipped according to all the requirements of the homeowners. There is no need to worry if the design of a small house allows only a bed to be placed in the room, since in this case you can use wall cabinets instead of the usual cabinets installed near the bed.

It is worth noting that the fewer various distracting things in the room, the better you will be able to relax in it and restore strength for the next fruitful day.

How to arrange a kitchen in a small house?

Cooking is an integral daily process for any woman. Even if the size of the room is quite modest, it will be necessary to prepare food, so it is important to use every centimeter effectively.

When choosing a kitchen set, special attention should be paid to ensuring that each cabinet has its own purpose and performs its functions.

If a separate room was not allocated for the kitchen during the construction of the house, then it is worth using any free space. For example, to place various kitchen attributes, you can use the passage area located next to the exit from the house.

When space is limited country houses You don’t have to force yourself with huge kitchen sets. Today, in almost any hardware store you can find excellent helpers, namely high-quality hanging shelves and rails at an affordable price.

Bathroom design in small houses

Having a bathroom is always a necessity. Even if there is very little space, it is very important to create an atmosphere that will truly promote relaxation.

In order to use space ergonomically, you should never clutter the room with various non-essential items.

It is better to turn to brands of sanitary ware and bathroom furniture that offer excellent solutions, such as shelving installed directly above the toilet.

A small wooden house can be short term build it yourself, since you will need quite a few materials for it, as well as free space. It is worth noting that such houses are very often built not for themselves, but for guests.

The interior of a small house can be the most ordinary - use more wooden furniture in the design, pay attention to interesting ideas for storing a wide variety of small things, and in order for the rooms to have the right accents, use accessories in bright colors.

about the project
Location: Morrisville, Vermont
Size: 18.6 sq.m
Owner: Ethan Waldman

Once upon a time there was a 26-year-old American office worker, Ethan Waldman, who did not like working in the office for someone else's uncle. He once took an unpaid vacation to bike around California for a month. During his vacation, he stayed in many mini-homes designed for camping.

These ranged from tiny wooden houses standing on the ground to mobile structures on a trailer. They made a deep impression on the bike traveler!

After his vacation, Ethan seriously thought about how to start his own business and become happier. To do this, he needed to quit his job, which means that at a time when the business was just starting and was not bringing in any income, expenses had to be greatly reduced. You won’t eat less - that’s why the question of reducing food arose in the first place. rent for housing - Ethan didn’t have his own yet. Isn’t it true, isn’t this quite a common situation not only for American young people, but also for Russia?

But how can you significantly reduce costs if they are already not too high? Together with two neighbors, Ethan filmed three-room apartment. Moving to a smaller room would reduce rent costs, but, firstly, only slightly, and secondly, it would mean that you would have to throw away some of your favorite things. “I was quite young at the time and had only lived on my own for the last seven years after graduating from college. However, I was surprised to find that I had accumulated a lot of things during this time,” Ethan said.

It was at that moment that Waldman remembered the tiny camping houses he had seen during his travels in California. According to American laws, in order to obtain a building permit, you had to be the owner of the land, which Ethan did not have! However, there was a loophole in the law! A permit was not needed if the house was not built on the ground, but on a trailer - on the base of a trailer. By building a house on his relative's land, he could also avoid taxes. With the maintenance of a house, which would cost only $100 a month in the United States, Ethan could reduce his costs several times.

Those who seek will find: an article by blogger Tammy Strobel talked about the construction of such a mini-house.

Ethan began to act: save money and give away unnecessary things to his friends and acquaintances. He bought it inexpensively ready plan home and showed it to his friend the architect Milford Cushman. Cushman replied that he could do more interesting project mini-houses, and two friends started developing a wooden frame house based on a trailer from scratch.

The house was built on a 6x2 meter trailer and was located in Morrisville, Vermont at the time of writing. Although now - who knows? After all, this is a house on wheels! By the way, this is why its height is limited to 3.8 meters due to the height of bridges, crossings and the level of hanging wires in accordance with Vermont traffic safety laws.

Architect Milford Cushman provided many windows in the house, but thanks to a well-thought-out airtight design and solid wall insulation, the house retains heat well in winter.

The interior of the house is an example of rational functionality. A sofa futon with drawers for clothes is not only a place of relaxation, but also a storage room. The folding table is used both as a dining table and as a work table. A light staircase leads to the sleeping mezzanine, where there are built-in lockers on both sides.

Under the mezzanine there is a compact kitchen with a stove, refrigerator, shelves and sink. Behind the kitchen at the very end of the house, behind sliding doors, there is a shower and a composting toilet.

Another, small mezzanine, located above the front door, is used to store things such as backpacks, skis, books and luggage. “Ethan had to make important decisions about every element of the design,” says the architect.

Initially, Ethan wanted to build a house with his own hands, but very quickly realized that he lacked the skills. “I try not to downplay the amount of work you'll face when building your own home, especially if you'd like to continue working full-time and juggling other responsibilities,” says Ethan.

He hired a local carpenter, Jason Bednarz, who would work on one part of the house, then take a break and return a week later when it was time to start working on it. next part. By financial reasons Construction of the house took one year and three months. Ethan spent approximately $12,000 on hiring workers and $30,000 on materials.

Drywall was almost never used in finishing the house. The interior is clad in white pine planks. Some of the boards are covered with either stain or whitewash (like, for example, a bedroom), and the other is painted.

Ethan and Milford Cushman spent a long time selecting materials for their shower. The tiles could fall off when moving the house, so this option was immediately eliminated. The architect didn't like the look of a standard plastic shower cover. He wanted to use stainless steel, but Ethan Waldman's girlfriend, Anne Carpenter, a nurse by profession, did not want to shower in a room that would remind her of a hospital. As a result, Cushman decided to use sheets of copper in the shower, which gave an unexpectedly interesting effect of a kind of steampunk style!

There is a small sawdust-based composting toilet in the house. After each use, sawdust or other organic matter is added to the toilet. Then the contents, along with food waste, are sent to a compost pit, which is located approximately 30 meters from the house.

Ethan was actually able to put a house on the land of one of his relatives after construction, for which he regularly mows the grass and clears the driveway. He spends most of the year at home with his girlfriend, Anne Carpenter, who has an apartment in nearby Burlington, where the couple sometimes live for periods of time. Thanks to its permanent location, the house has a flexible connection to the sewer system, and wires connect the house to the garage and provide it with electricity.

The house, which looks like a typical forest or mountain cottage, is located in rural areas. Although the other houses are not visible, they are very close. A grocery store can be reached by car in 10 minutes.

The house is located in a picturesque area, among hills and mountains. There are many trees nearby and there are skiing and hiking trails. “Everything we love about Vermont is right in our backyard. “We don’t have a yard, though, so it’s all right outside the door,” Ethan jokes.

Couples can remove ski or hiking boots on a bench near the entrance, which has storage underneath.

Like many small home owners, Ethan is very careful about what he brings into the house. “Now I’m much more selective. When I receive a gift and know I don't have room for it, instead of trying to put it somewhere in the house, I either return it immediately or donate it to a charity shop."

There is a small refrigerator in the house, so Ethan often goes to the store and buys little by little. Instead of processed foods that need to be stored in the freezer, he prefers fresh fruits and vegetables.

What about Ethan Waldman's business? He founded his own consulting company, Cloud Coach, and recently wrote a book about construction called Tiny House Decisions.

Would you like us to build you such a house? Of course, it will cost less in Russia.

How the idea to build a tiny house on wheels came about

I once purchased 2 hectares of land on a wonderful lake. Work in big construction company in leadership positions did not allow me to do what I loved - to develop some of my own buildings at the site. In addition, there was a coastal strip with a nature protection zone, on which it was impossible to build anything permanent.

First, the idea arose to build a tiny house for friends, and then, with changing circumstances, to create a recreation center consisting of at least three Tiny Houses (tiny houses).

It did not seem realistic to build them without construction experience, resorting to the help of hired workers. It is clear that the first house had to be made by itself.

Tiny houses, or as they are also called Tiny House, have been known for a very long time. I liked the idea because in a small volume you get enough functionality for comfortable living and relative mobility.

I started building it 1.5 years ago. This is due to the fact that initially construction was carried out on weekends, when I was very busy at my main job. Subsequently, there were a number of other projects that distracted me, and now I’ve just returned to the finishing touches.

Exterior of the house:

About searching for a trailer

Various roofing schemes were studied and designed: single-pitched, broken and complex. I am an architect, designer, and builder myself. All this is available to me. I didn’t have any initially dark moments in construction.

The main problem, which I spent about 4 months on, was to find a crazy person who would agree to do what I needed. I'm talking about the trailer. And at the same time within the framework of vehicle approval.

This was before the crisis. At the same time, trailer manufacturers, roughly speaking, built in bulk. And dealers bought everything from them wholesale. They refused to build anything different.

But there was such a person. I made him a project for air suspensions that go down to zero, and made levers for them. All that remains is to purchase a head for the overrun brake, which will work with hydraulics, since the plan was initially to make hydraulic brakes.

My proposal to make them ourselves was not supported. He says it will take a long time to certify them. Don't know. I'm already tired of convincing people that everything can be done.

Assembling a tiny house structure

The trailer was found. This was the basis for my house. After this, construction began. The projects existed for a year on paper, in my head, but the funny thing is, when I arrived, I started building from scratch, not even according to the projects. Because of this, the house turned out to have all the mistakes because of which I myself would shoot any contractor.

I have a wooden frame. It was necessary to clearly calculate the pitch of the floor planks and rafters, so as not to make unnecessary cuts, adjustments and everything else. My mistakes are naturally invisible and do not affect the quality. These are technologically unnecessary things that impose costs on production.

Penoflex was used as insulation. The walls of the house are a fairly thick sandwich. And if you count it in terms of wood, this is a log house with a wall thickness of just under forty centimeters.

At the same time, a certain compromise was made, which I now partly regret, since I want to use the house in the off-season. I made a large panoramic door next to the fireplace. In fact, this is another view window, and in the absence of a vestibule, it does not allow it to be economically used in terms of energy saving in winter.

The only thing that I will not repeat when building future houses is Shinglas (soft tiles) on the roof. I really wanted to use it, I liked it as a material. But in fact, it is heavy, and it was allowed only with the understanding of the following compromise: no one will drive with this house like Schumacher, accordingly, any special critical moments related to a sufficiently high center of gravity and installation should not arise.

Everything is assembled with sheathing on the membrane. All condensate that collects from the roof does not go to the materials, but collects on it and goes into the ground.

I have laminate flooring. And I don't really like him. Its moisture resistance shows that it is capable of absorbing some moisture, but ideal dryness cannot be achieved in this house in the absence of a vestibule. It will not deteriorate and will work, but in the next house I will think about how to implement some kind of replacement for it.

I wanted to design the house with a country touch, so the outside was chosen to have a Scandinavian, laconic design. For this I received a lot of trolling from friends. They now call it Misha's pink house. I prove to everyone that he is lilac, but I understand that this is instead of a friendly pat on the shoulder.

The windows in the house are double-glazed. The layout of the windows and their size are also determined by zoning and the opportunity to still live in nature, contemplating the beauty.

I also really like the idea of Dutch or rectangular small windows. I am going to use it in my homes in the future, depending on what the tasks will be.

Dimensions and weight of a tiny house

I haven’t put it on the scale, but I think it weighs a little over 2 tons. In terms of dimensions: maximum transport dimensions: 2.5 four meters, minus the height of 7 cm.

The decision to use this trailer without lowering the frame and subframe even lower was forced.

It’s just that the manufacturer was not ready to change everything on the first samples, not yet trusting me as a designer. I wanted to immediately purchase three trailers, and they have already been purchased. Later I plan to do air suspension. The house will go down “to zero”, but at the same time the resting wheels will steal a little space from the internal volumes, this will also be played up, but the house will actually stand on the ground.

Tiny House Layout

The layout of my house is standard. I have an alcove area upstairs. It is located above the utility block. A gas convector is considered the most optimal and cheapest solution. The experience of its operation has shown that it can work normally, but additional taps need to be installed, since the system cannot be bleed when replacing cylinders. Unlike branded equipment.

My deepest convictions are that, despite the high cost, the Truma Combi stove (which at today's exchange rate costs more than 100 thousand rubles) is a solution when you forget about the heat problem. You came in, turned the switch and you felt warm and comfortable.

I also have an excellent Polish fireplace installed in the house. It heats up beautifully and sitting on an ottoman by the fireplace you can contemplate all those views that you have long dreamed of.

The house is completely autonomous

catchment area Now implemented from the roof. I have two special filters. I haven’t completed the fastening yet, because I’m trying to test both options to understand which is easier to maintain.

Where I have a tiny house, there is so much trash pouring into the gutters that none of it can hold up properly yet.

Still, putting a house under a pine tree that loses cones and needles in the fall is a bad idea, I’ll tell you honestly. Overall the system works. I think it is necessary to either clean it more often, or come up with some other filtration system. This is already a matter of technology. I'll bring it to mind.

In addition, I made quite large water tanks (about 280 l)

Electricity

I have two 150 W solar panels installed on the roof of my house. I thought that this was enough for my load.

From 12 watts, only the lights and music, and two water pumps work for me. One Aqua 8 feeds the gas water heater, and the second economical one feeds the second tap in the kitchen and can be connected to a bottle of drinking water. Both pumps are for camping use.

This time I did without the Truma Combi stove, thereby reducing the cost by 4 times.

Heating

Gas convector fireplace + small Finnish car stove 220/800, which is mounted in a special niche under the shelf.

Insulation

As I already said, I used penoflex as insulation.

Other

Refrigerator - gas/220.

Gas stove using liquefied gas.

The gas water heater provides water heating, as in a full shower. The shower pump is provided by the Aqua 8 electric pump.

The house now has a very light porch made of aluminum profile.

About getting around with a tiny house on wheels

I have been riding with a trailer weighing closer to 2 tons for a very long time. I had my own two-ton boats, which, due to the difficult landscape of Lake Ladoga, I could not go down anywhere. And the boat is located high enough on its support, and dropping it or lowering it unsuccessfully onto the landscape is not so scary, but hanging the house in such a way that you have to pull it out with a tractor, and possibly with torsion losses, is easy. It is too heavy for our “inexpensive” ones, and therefore you should be careful with it.

Mikhail's contacts.

1. Small, but remote. "Official" record holder (Canada, Toronto).

This house is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest house in the world. Its area is 28 m2. Despite its tiny dimensions (width - 2 meters, length - 14 meters, ceiling height - 2.36 meters), The house is quite comfortable and very cozy.

It has everything you need for normal living: a compact kitchen with a folding table, an armchair and a washing machine; bedroom with folding bed; "living room" with sofa and TV and a normal sized bathroom. There is even a basement, a well-kept tiny garden and charming patio at the back of the house.

The house was built in 1912 and immediately became a local landmark.

2. "Fisherman's House"(UK, Conwy).

The smallest house in the UK is considered to be a “fisherman's cottage”, which is located in Conwy, a small coastal town in north Wales.

It was built back in the 14th century, its dimensions are: 3.05 x 1.8 m. On the ground floor near the wall of this house there was a bunker with coal, a place for cooking over an open fire and under the stairs there was a tank with water. On the second floor there was a living room with a bed, bedside table, stove and washbasin. People lived in it until the beginning of the 20th century, and since 1900 it became a museum.

They say that in the 19th century it was even home to a family... of 8 people!

3. For resourceful romantics (Austria, Salzburg).

This small house at number 109 on Altmarket Square, whose facade is only one and a half meters, was also built in the Middle Ages - in the 15th century, and a romantic story is associated with its construction. Once upon a time, a girl agreed to her boyfriend to marry him only when he had his own home. The young man was very poor, but smart - he squeezed his house into the wall between two existing houses.

4. What's behind the door? "Fake" record holder

Residents of Amsterdam never tire of repeating that the smallest house in their city is number 7. However, this is not entirely true. The fact is that at the time the building was erected, the housing tax directly depended on the width of the facade. And the enterprising owner built a full-fledged house, but with a facade of 1.1 m, which in fact is just an entrance (house no. 7).

5. “Kiosk House”

You might not even notice this house, thinking that it’s just a kiosk. It is attached to the Church of the Holy Spirit in the New Town and has always had its own address. The house was built in 1843 as a trading facility for the sale of Constantinople tobacco. Later, overseas cigars imported from Cuba and Mexico were also sold here. Noble clients were even honored with a glass of wine. During the Polish Uprising, there was a turnout of underground fighters in the house. Later, magazines and postcards from Paris depicting women in negligee were added to the product range. This caused a big scandal in Catholic Warsaw. Today it still sells newspapers.

6. Modern minimalism(Japan).

The Japanese have always been famous for their ability to rationally use useful space. Due to the lack of land, they are forced to somehow get out and build houses on tiny plots. This house was built on a plot of 15 m2, but the designer managed to increase the space and build housing of 44 m2. Inside there is a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and even a small balcony.

7. House of forest fairies

A cozy mini-cottage with an area of 21 m2 is located in a forested area, not far from a small lake. It seems that in this small house magical forest fairies live. But nevertheless, the cottage has everything you need: a kitchen-living room, a bathroom with toilet, a bedroom and, as you can see, a small veranda. Compact and cozy.

8. Every cricket know its own corner! (Japan Tokyo).

On a small plot of land, enterprising Japanese built a comfortable dwelling with an area of 29 m2. The house is two-story, designed for a family of three (a couple with a daughter) and has a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a nursery and even a garage for a car.

And since the landscape on which the dwelling was built had a triangular shape, the architects had to repeat it when designing the house.

9. Super-slim (Brazil,Madre De Dius).

This tall but very narrow house was built in the town of Madre De Dius, Bahia. The width of its facade facing the street is only 1 meter 10 centimeters, and the widest place in the house is about two meters. The height of the entire house is 10 meters.

The house has three floors, which compactly accommodate two living rooms, three bedrooms, a kitchen and a veranda.

10. Residential art object

In 2012, an unusual narrow house was built in the center of Warsaw. The facade of a new building, squeezed between two apartment buildings, is only 152 centimeters, and the internal width of the home varies from 122 to 72 centimeters. The living area of the house is 14.5 m2.

Despite its small size, the house has everything you need for a comfortable life - bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen.

The building is registered as an art object, and not a residential premises, since its parameters do not comply with Polish building regulations.

11. Five-star hotel in 53 m2(Germany, Amberg).

The German Wedding House hotel is only 2.5 m wide. living space– 53 m2. Despite this, the only room available at the hotel has to be reserved several months in advance, such is its popularity. The hotel is squeezed into a narrow space between two neighboring buildings. The interior of the wedding house makes an unforgettable impression on guests - it is equipped with a comfortable bed, a fireplace, luxurious furniture, a TV and even a SPA salon.

The hotel was built in 1728, when the city council of Amberg decided that there would be more weddings if newly married couples had accommodation that they could move into immediately after the wedding. But since it was unrealistic to provide housing for all the newlyweds even then, they found another way out: they built this tiny house in which the happy couple spent several weeks and then passed it on to the next young family. Since then it has become known as a wedding house.

Legend has it that those who spend at least one night at the hotel live happily ever after and never get divorced. Therefore, many newlyweds want to start their family life in this “happy” hotel.

12. Mini on the ranch

Not everything is big in Texas. These small houses are located in Luling. They are sustainable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Inside each house there is one large room, a bathroom and a kitchen. The opposite side of the room is used as a living room and bedroom. When friends come to the owners, air mattresses are laid out on the floor.

13. House on wheels (USA).

Tumbleweed, a company that specializes in miniature buildings, has created one of the smallest houses in the world. Its area is only 6 m2.

This miniature house consists of a kitchen with a refrigerator, a shower room with a toilet and a bedroom in the attic. Distinctive feature home - its mobility. The house is placed on a special trailer platform and can be easily transported from place to place. In addition, it is equipped with a simple and convenient system for quick connection to electrical networks and water supply.
