And for some the appearance contactless cards glasses became something unimaginable. In fact, contactless payment cards existed back in 2002, but in testing mode, and only now Visa and MasterCard, having tested wireless payment technology over the years and established security standards, introduced cards contactless payment for general use.

Sberbank contactless card- this is the same bank card that provides the opportunity to make payments through the terminal with one touch of the card to the terminal, currently within the limit of 1000 rubles. For more expensive purchases, you must enter your card PIN. This technology is called Pay Pass and it is convenient and safe.

How to use a Sberbank contactless card

The card can be used at all updated POS terminals (usually they are marked with a wireless payment icon). They are now almost everywhere.

To pay for a purchase, simply bring your card to the terminal. There is no need to insert it into the receiver; the PIN code needs to be entered only in case of payment for an amount over 1000 rubles; in the case of a smaller amount, the PIN code is not required.

The contactless card payment process consists of three steps:

  • Bring the payment card close to the terminal or at a distance of 0.5 - 1 centimeter
  • Fix the card in this position for a couple of seconds
  • After a notification about successful payment appears on the terminal screen, the card can be removed

If the POS terminal of the previous generation does not support the card, then payment is made as with a regular card.

Sberbank contactless cards pros and cons

  • Convenience of payment. You don’t need to take the card out of your wallet and insert it into the terminal; you just need to touch it for a couple of seconds and the purchase is made. This saves a lot of time, especially while shopping.

  • Payment security. The risk of money being stolen from the account by criminals is eliminated.

As for owners of retail outlets, some complain about the high cost of POS terminals that support contactless cards. As they say, all good things come at a price. In this case, you will have to pay for the convenience of customers.

Security of MasterCard Pay Pass contactless cards

It would be a good idea to think about the security of payments using contactless cards. Contactless payment technology has several degrees of protection.

  • The range of data transmission via NFC is only a few centimeters, so during the operation the reader must be placed close to the card, which is quite difficult to do unnoticed.
  • There is another level of protection - restriction maximum amount contactless transaction: 1000 rubles. The limit of 1000 rubles without a PIN is the recommendation of Visa and Mastercard in Russia. Payments for a larger amount will be rejected or require additional confirmation (signature, PIN). If you try to sequentially withdraw several amounts below the threshold, the additional protection system is also triggered.
  • Next you need to overcome more serious protection based on cryptography. The reading terminal must have cryptographic keys obtained from the acquiring bank and the payment system. Such keys are issued exclusively under an agreement with the bank that issued the card.

All this provides comprehensive protection and security of operations.

Definition

PayPass is a contactless payment technology via MasterCard. To pay, simply tap your card with a microprocessor on the terminal. This is the PayPass technology. In fact, the card is a microcircuit with an antenna. In Taiwan, the USA, Spain and Turkey, the MasterCard PayPass microprocessor is built into wristwatches, Cell phones and other items that a person carries with him every day.

This security allows you to make small purchases simply, quickly and safely. Now, when paying, there is no need to struggle with banknotes, swipe your card through the terminal, or sign checks. The user just needs to touch a special terminal. PayPass technology is very useful in the field of trading goods with low value and high transaction frequency. But for its widespread development in the future, it is necessary to strengthen the security of operations.

History of development

In 2003, MasterCard spent nine months testing the use of contactless technology in Orlando and Florida. At 60 different points, users paid with 16 thousand cards. At the same time, the company was working on its compatibility with Nokia, JPMorgan, AT&T to implement PayPass in mobile phones. In 2008, the 50 millionth device was produced. By this point, 77% of users used contactless technology as their main means of payment. By 2010, PayPass was launched in Bulgaria and Slovakia, users had 75 million cards in their hands, which were accepted at 230 thousand terminals. According to financial report company for 2012, production volume increased by 50% due to an increase in the number of users throughout Europe. Today PayPass cards are issued by Sberbank of Russia and Privat in Ukraine.

The potential of PayPass has not yet been revealed

What does it mean? Contactless transactions benefit all market participants: consumers, merchants and banks. Financial organizations provide their customers with a larger number of issuers - increasing the loyalty of account holders to card programs. This technology can complement any credit, debit, co-branding and other programs.

Trade organizations that have a PayPass terminal installed can serve their clients for more high level. Reducing the number of operations speeds up the process cash service and ensures its higher efficiency. First large enterprise, which started using MasterCard PayPass is McDonald's. Soon interest in new technology originated among football players and golfers. The contactless system is now used in turnstiles, vending machines, etc.

PayPass: where is it accepted and issued in Russia

The first contactless payment in the Russian Federation was carried out on 09.09.08 in the Moscow restaurant “Five Stars”. First PayPass card was issued by Industrial Bank in 2010. It is planned to issue a separate edition of cards for students and teachers. They can be used not only for their intended purpose, but also as a record book and student card.

Since 2011, a card with a magnetic stripe and a microchip has been issued by Raiffeisenbank. It is given to clients free of charge as part of the Premium package. But to use it you need to have at least 2 million rubles. or 1 million if you spend more than 25 thousand rubles per month. Clients who do not comply with this condition will pay RUB 3,000 monthly.

Analogs in the world

Contactless technologies also exist in Visa system. PayWare is an analogue of PayPass. What does it mean? Visa and JCB Co. Ltd. entered into an agreement to accept the development of MasterCard as a single protocol, that is, all contactless technologies will be tested according to the same scheme, ensuring compatibility of all brands.

The main advantages of contactless payments:

  • modern calculation method;
  • universal means of payment - such bank card can be used not only on new devices, but also in numerous ATMs and terminals;
  • long service life;
  • high payment speed;
  • protection from fraudsters.

But there is one big drawback - the lack of developed infrastructure, the cost of which is so high that neither banks nor trading enterprises are in no hurry to invest in it. In the UK, terminals were installed in only 10% of stores over 3 years.

PayPass: how to use

Thanks to the presence of a special chip, contactless cards can make small payments without authentication by the holder. Such transactions are limited to 15 dollars in the USA, 50 zlotys in Poland, 10 pounds in the UK, 1000 rubles in Russia. Operations on large amounts you will have to confirm by signing a receipt or entering a PIN code. But not all banks allow this. For example, in Germany and Austria, if the limit is exceeded, payment will have to be made using the usual contact method.

MasterCard issues debit and credit PayPass. How to use a contactless chip?

After each transaction, the amount is debited from a bank or personal account. Since the connection is contactless, instead of a card you can use a key fob with an RFID sticker, a smartphone with NFC, etc. Goods can only be paid for at retail outlets with the PayWave Visa, PayPass logo. The terminal confirms the reading procedure with a sound signal. The user does not have to transfer the card into the wrong hands, enter a PIN code, or sign a check. All you have to do is bring your wallet with your card to the terminal. There should be no other plastic media with a chip inside. In Germany they are also installed on identity cards.

Safety

Contactless transactions significantly reduce time. But in terms of security, they raise a lot of questions among users. The RFID chip can partially remotely clone cards at a distance of up to 2 cm. This fact calls into question the complete contactless use.

PayPass prevents direct RFID reading. The chip contains information about the card number and expiration date, and this is not enough for online transactions. A one-time code is generated for each operation. If you count it until the card is used, you can create a clone of it. The first use of the code by the duplicate will be approved, and the repeated use by the original will lead to blocking of both media. Given the low transaction limits, card cloning is not profitable.

Perform many operations with mobile terminal will not work. In areas with a large population, data on such transactions must be sent to an authorized center to prevent unauthorized persons from using the card. Such systems analyze each generated code and check it for duplicates. For full protection information, you need to shield the card, for example, wrap it in foil.

Where to use MasterCard Mobile PayPass technology

There are many “contactless” points in other large cities of Russia: supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, beauty salons and other similar establishments. In addition, some organizations hold promotions for PayPass technology users. For example, in the northern capital, until the end of February, by paying for an order in your favorite cafe using a smartphone, you can receive coffee as a gift.

Very comfortably. Thank you

In principle, a normal bank... or more, probably, a broker - it seems that they want to force all clients to become investors)) I just use the card, the bonuses are not bad, there is cashback - everything is like with people. If it weren’t for the constant calls and letters with offers to “think about investing”, everything would be normal... Oh, and exchange rate good. But I don’t want to be a trader, and I’m tired of persuasion.

About reliability and convenience

I have been a client of the bank since the beginning of the 2000s (since Investsberbank, since 2008 - OTP). I met the branches of the head bank in completely different countries Europe, incl. in the post-Soviet space. I used ATMs there and paid for purchases and services with a card. During this time, I did not encounter any difficulties when interacting with the Bank, changing cards according to the expiration date, making deposits (by the way...

In principle, the service is good, it was my number 1 bank until one unpleasant situation. My card was demagnetized and I blocked it to order a new one. Naturally, before this, I transferred the money to the card to another bank, so that while they were making the card for me, I could use it. We must give credit to the bank; the card was made and delivered very quickly. BUT THE AMOUNT THAT I TRANSFERTED TO ANOTHER BANK FOR SOMETHING...
